From Homelessness to Healthcare: The CURE North Star Initiative

A Path from Homelessness to Healthcare and Independence

What if the people we help today become the healthcare professionals who help us tomorrow?
Across America, people are experiencing homelessness while healthcare organizations struggle to find qualified professionals. What if we could address both problems through education, housing, and meaningful employment?
That's why we created the CURE North Star Initiative.
How It Began
In 2023, I traveled to San Francisco to teach physicians vascular ultrasound. I was deeply troubled by the homelessness I witnessed and returned home wondering what we could do to help.
My son had a home, an education, transportation, and the support he needed to begin his adult life. But what about young people just like him who don't?
I brought the idea to my team, and together we began developing North Star.
What started with something I witnessed in one city has become a vision for communities throughout the United States.
From Homelessness to Healthcare
North Star is designed to provide individuals experiencing homelessness with the resources necessary to pursue healthcare careers.
Our scholarships are intended to cover tuition, housing, food, healthcare, transportation, childcare, pet care, educational supplies, supervised clinical training, and career placement assistance.
We are beginning with diagnostic medical sonography, commonly known as ultrasound, through ADOM Academy in Connecticut and the Center for Ultrasound Research & Education (CURE) in New York.
CURE is institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and licensed by the New York State Education Department's Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (NYSED BPSS).
Our educational experience dates back to 1999, and our network includes more than 120 clinical partnerships.
Participants begin their education in Connecticut and complete supervised clinical training through participating healthcare organizations nationwide.
Our long-term vision includes expanding into nursing and physician assistant education.
We want to provide more than an education. We want to provide the opportunity for financial independence.
What If the People We Help Are the People Who Help Us?
If you've watched Jimmy Darts on social media, you've probably seen people experiencing homelessness offering their last dollar, their food, or even their shoes to help someone else.
People who have almost nothing sometimes demonstrate extraordinary generosity.
Think about what that says about their compassion.
Now imagine those same individuals working in healthcare.
Imagine a frightened patient being cared for by someone who understands what it feels like to be vulnerable, uncertain, or overlooked.
We can teach anatomy, physiology, pathology, and how to perform an ultrasound examination. But genuine compassion is something special.
Perhaps some of the people society has overlooked are exactly the people our healthcare system needs.
What if the people we save are the ones who save us?
We Believe in Cures
Our company is called CURE for a reason.
As sonographers, we're trained to look beneath the surface, investigate problems, and understand their causes.
We believe that same thinking can help us address homelessness.
Rather than continually responding to the consequences, what if we could help eliminate the circumstances that keep people from becoming independent?
A stable home creates an opportunity to learn. Education creates an opportunity for employment. Employment creates the opportunity for financial independence.
And independence creates choices.
The Pay It Forward Model
We don't want North Star to help one group of people and then stop.
Our proposed sustainability model combines philanthropy, employer sponsorship, and contributions from graduates.
Employers invest in education. Healthcare organizations can sponsor students while developing a workforce of qualified professionals.
Graduates help provide housing. Once graduates establish their careers, they can help support housing for future participants rather than repay tuition.
Each successful graduate creates the possibility of another opportunity.
Invest. Employ. Reinvest.
What About Mental Health, Addiction, and Eligibility?
We recognize that homelessness has many causes, including job loss, family conflict, eviction, unsafe living conditions, mental illness, and addiction.
North Star cannot meet every individual's needs through one educational pathway.
Participants must be able to meet the educational, clinical, safety, and professional requirements of their chosen careers. We also believe kindness, accountability, and compassion are essential qualities in healthcare.
We hope to work with healthcare and community partners to help individuals access the support they need.
Stronger Together
North Star brings together educators, healthcare employers, clinical partners, housing organizations, philanthropists, and communities.
Through CURE Scientific, Inc., our affiliated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, charitable contributions can support the North Star Initiative.
Every partnership can help remove a barrier between homelessness and independence.
What If This Works?
Imagine someone who once slept in a car becoming the sonographer who helps diagnose a life-threatening condition.
Imagine someone who once needed help finding a home now earning enough to provide one for their family.
Imagine those graduates helping the next group of students do the same.
And imagine communities across America participating.
We don't want to keep putting Band-Aids on homelessness. We want a cure.
